by Nikki LLL Blog, April 02, 2021
Thanks to the pandemic and everyone staying at home, 2020 fostered renewed interest in interiors. And now, in 2021, many of those ideas are maturing into exciting concepts. In this post, we take a look at some of the hot interior trends to expect this coming summer.

Yellow & Grey

Yellow isn’t a common interior colour. And neither is grey for that matter. But when you mix the two, something semi-magical seems to happen. Your interiors transform from dull shells into spaces that look extraordinary.

Why are people using more yellow? Well, fundamentally, it’s a symbol of hope - a colour that represents a new dawn. In many ways, that’s precisely what summer 2021 will be.

Cottage Nostalgia

Thanks to the events of 2020, nostalgia for cosy cottage living is going to hit the interior design world in a big way in 2021. Given people have been spending so much time at home, many want to recreate that home-sweet-home feel in their apartments and maisonettes. They’re not quite like the family home, but they are a great way to bridge the gap.

Country, But Contemporary

Country homes have a certain style, but they’re usually a bit old-fashioned and stuffy. Many feature dated wallpaper, furniture and window dressings.

Contemporary country aims to change this by offering the best of both worlds. It takes what was good about the country movement and then adds modern elements to thoroughly update it, giving you something completely new in the process.

Mirror Mirror On The Wall (And Everywhere Else)

Mirrors have been a staple of interior design over the last decade, representing genuine progress for the field. But now, designers are trying to take the concept even further, adding yet more brightness to our interiors. Not only do we see regular mirrors, but also mirrored furniture. Adding more reflectivity entirely changes the character of the room.

Warm Colours

The winter of 2020/2021 was a bit of a nightmare, both in terms of lockdowns and weather. That’s why summer 2021 is likely to become a celebration, not just of freedom, but also of brightness itself. Many people haven’t seen the sun in months.

What kinds of warm colours can we expect? Expect focus to mainly be on oranges, blues and the aforementioned yellows.

African Influence

Thanks to the cultural change currently ongoing in the West, interiors are also likely to see more African influence. Expect changes in both artwork and material choices to better reflect the new global community in which we live.

The challenge will be to blend these traditional approaches to modern appetites. The idea is to blend styles so that even somebody who prefers neutral interiors can appreciate the global influence.

Traditionalism

At the other end of the spectrum, we’re also likely going to see more traditionalism - a return to the décor priorities of the past. Traditional interiors favour symmetry and soft furnishings. And they tend to incorporate more geometrics and courtly stripes. Expect to see fewer bold geometric shapes on the walls going forward.
