The Christmas period is, in fact, one of the most popular times for people to move home; with many buyers rushing to exchange and complete so that they can be moved into their new place for the big day. Moving house can be stressful at the best of times and is well known for being one of the most draining events that can occur in a person life... so couple this with the usual stresses and strains of the festive period and it may seem like a recipe for disaster. But moving house at Christmas needn’t be as bad as everyone makes it out to be - here's 5 top tips for an easy house move this festive period.

Plan ahead
When it comes to ensuring that a house move runs smoothly, nothing can beat effective planning. Plan ahead as far as is possible and confirm your moving date ahead of time. Most estate agents and moving firms will shut down over the festive period so be sure to set your date before the 24th to avoid moving in between Christmas and the New Year

Book your removals early
Christmas is a busy time of year for removal companies as they race to get everyone moved into their new homes before the festive period. Take a look online for ‘local movers near me’ to support local removal businesses and be sure to book your removal date to avoid disappointment closer to the time. Although you may be tempted to do the removal process yourself with time of the essence it is often worth the extra you will pay to have your removals done for you to simply reduce the number of trips you need to take.

Aim for organised packing
Start packing up your home at least 2 weeks prior to your removal date, keeping only essentials out to last you until moving day. Remember to clearly label each box with its contents and the room it should go to in your new home to make unpacking easier and pack a box specifically filled with your favourite Christmas decorations so that you can quickly re-decorate your home without having to hunt through piles of moving boxes. It can be helpful to already have your Christmas gifts wrapped and ready to go in boxes too so that it’s one less worry on your list.

Inform utility companies in advance
Remember not to risk the chance of having no gas, electric or internet this Christmas and remember to inform your providers of your move with plenty of time to spare. This will give you ample time to ensure that your utilities are ready to go when you move into your new home and will prevent you from receiving any nasty surprise bills.

Spread the good vibes forward
If you’re moving before Christmas the chances are that someone will be moving into our home too, so spread the good vibes forward by leaving them a little helping hand. Leave a few simple instructions to the new owners of your property such as information regarding when your bins are collected, where they will find your boiler and how to iron out any quirks the property may have. At this time of year it’s a nice gesture to do this in a Christmas card and maybe leave them a little bottle of bubbly to enjoy too.
