If you follow a good oral hygiene routine, your mouth will look and smell healthy. You won’t have to deal with bad breath, nor will you have any pain or blood when you brush your teeth. And, of course, your smile will look amazing too! After all, most people would agree that there is nothing more attractive than a healthy smile. What are the consequences of having bad oral hygiene?

If you don’t follow a good oral hygiene routine, there are many different health issues that could arise as a consequence. The most common dental issues include:

  • An unattractive smile – This may not be a dental problem, but it can lead to low self-esteem. Dermal fillers can help with this.
  • Toothache – Toothache can be incredibly painful, and if you do not look after your teeth, it can also be a regular occurrence.
  • Tooth sensitivity – Tooth sensitivity involves experiencing discomfort or pain from your teeth whenever you eat ice cream, drink cold or hot drinks, eat sweets, or come into contact with cold air. Some people even suffer from this when they floss and brush their teeth.

  • Gum disease – This is an infection of the gums around the teeth. It is a leading cause of tooth loss.
  • Tooth decay - This happens when plaque combines with stretches and sugars, which results in acid that attacks the teeth, causing cavities or tooth decay.
  • Bad breath – Bad breath can be embarrassing, yet it is also easily avoidable if you look after your mouth.

How to keep on top of oral hygiene

Keeping on top of oral hygiene doesn't need to be complicated. There are a number of steps you can take that will greatly reduce your chances of suffering from dental problems, including gum disease and tooth decay. This includes the following:

  • Eat a balanced diet and limit snacks in between meals.
  • Brush your teeth twice per day.
  • After you have finished cleaning your teeth, gently brush your tongue to get rid of bacteria and to freshen your breath.
  • Limit sugary drinks and foods.
  • Use mouthwash and toothpaste products that contain fluoride.
  • Avoid chewing tobacco products or smoking cigarettes.

Hopefully, you now feel more prepared for looking after your teeth, gums and mouth. Oral hygiene does not need to be difficult, it only requires a few tweaks to your daily routine, yet the benefits are vast. If you take steps now to make sure your mouth is healthy, you will reduce visits to the dentist and keep your smile looking gorgeous at all times, as well as keep your teeth stronger for longer.
