The weather is warming up and it’s time to start picking out your summer wardrobe. You can get rid of all of those thick coats and jumpers for the year and start getting out the long flowing dresses and add a bit more colour to your life.

The great thing about summer fashion is that there's more room for accessorising. You can still accessorise during the winter, of course... but most of the time you’re picking things out for practicality over style and half the time, you’re covered up with a thick coat anyway. But in the summer, you don’t need to worry about keeping warm so you have more freedom to mix and match some beautiful outfits - and accessorising is a big part of that.

If you’re putting your summer wardrobe together right now, make sure that you don’t forget these important accessorising tips.

Sunglasses

The one functional accessory that you do need is a good pair of sunglasses... unless you want to be squinting at the sun all day long. You can just pick up a cheap pair if you like, but you’re going to be getting a lot of wear out of them; so it’s sometimes best to spend a bit more on some good quality ones, such as Gucci glasses.

There are a few things that you need to consider when you’re buying a pair of sunglasses. First off, you need to be careful with the colour and design because you need something that is going to match with all of your summer outfits, otherwise, you’ll have to start buying a separate pair of sunglasses for each day of the week. Something loud and flowery might look great with a bold summer dress but they might not necessarily work with everything in your wardrobe, so it’s a good idea to tone it down a little.

You also need to think about your face shape as well. If you’ve got a round face shape, for example, you don’t want round frame glasses because they will just make your face look more round than it is. Instead, you want something with sharper angles to elongate the face.

Piercings

Your summer outfits are going to show a bit more skin so you can show off your piercings a bit more. For example, nice belly bars are a great way to add a bit of sparkle to a crop top and jeans combo. You can also be a bit more experimental with ear piercings because the brighter colours and bold patterns in your summer wardrobe lend themselves more to extravagant earrings. You should look for some larger, dangly earrings and layer them up with a few smaller studs as well.

Jewellery

Jewellery is a lot more important when you’re putting together a summer outfit because you don’t have as many layers. Winter outfits have plenty of layers but a summer outfit usually consists of one or two pieces, so you need to use jewellery to add more layers to it. Chunky necklaces are a favourite and they work great with a flowery summer dress. Layering up a lot of smaller necklaces and bracelets is a great look as well.

Hats

Winter hats are all woolly and not the most flattering, but in the summer you can pick something a little more elegant. It’s still a functional item, especially if you don’t want to wear sunglasses all day, but it adds a lot to the outfit as well. When you’re picking a hat, it’s important to find one that suits your complexion and face shape. If you’ve got fairly pale skin, a big white fedora is just going to make you look too pale so you’d be better off with something a lot darker like a black of a grey. Lighter shades of brown and tan are flattering to pretty much any skin tone so it’s always a good idea to have a few of those in your wardrobe.

Fragrance

When people pick out a fragrance, they don’t often think about matching it to their outfit, but it’s very important and you should consider it like you do any other accessory. Different fragrances conjure up a certain vibe and you should try to match that to your outfit. For example, if you’re wearing a colourful, flowery summer dress, you should look for a fragrance that has a lot of fruity notes. But if you’re wearing something more understated and formal, you’ll be better off with a fragrance that has more natural tones like sandalwood.
